Established in 1974 as the Indianapolis Association of Chinese Americans, the nonprofit changed its name to the Indiana Association of Chinese Americans (IACA) to broaden its membership to Chinese living outside Central Indiana. The group fosters constructive citizenship on the part of Chinese Americans. Its activities strive to improve the overall well-being of Chinese American residents while highlighting their contributions to the Hoosier state. IACA is not affiliated with any religious or political organization.

Through the decades, IACA has provided cultural and social activities for its members as well as other local cultural organizations. IACA has been an active participant in the annual Indianapolis International Festival since its inception in the 1970s. At the International Festival, IACA shares Chinese art and culture with the community. In 1987, IACA collaborated with Indiana governor Robert D. Orr’s office to celebrate the establishment of Indiana-Zhejiang sister-state relationship.

IACA’s outreach programs include visits and cultural demonstrations to schools, local libraries, professional and business entities. IACA collaborates with the Eiteljorg Museum, Newfields, and the International Market Place. Its members volunteer for city cleanups, tree planting, and many other socially conscious activities.

The IACA Lion Dance Team exemplifies the organization’s participation in the Indianapolis area community at large. The team has performed at major celebratory events, including Chinese New Year celebrations, the July 4th Parade, the Indianapolis 500 Festival, Parade, Carmel Fest Parade, Carmel’s Moon Cake Festival, Pacers NBA games, and many other celebratory events held by other local corporations and organizations.
