Infosys is an India-based technology company focused on business consulting, information technology, and outsourcing services. One of its U.S. technology centers is in Indianapolis.
The Pune, Maharashtra, India, company was founded in 1981 by N. R. Narayana Murthy and 6 engineers. Before starting Infosys, Murthy worked at the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad, India, as the chief systems programmer, and at Patni Computer Systems in Pune, Maharashtra, India. He is considered one of the top-10 contemporary entrepreneurs in India. Within six years, Infosys opened its first international office in Boston. By the end of the 1990s, Infosys had reached $100 million in revenue and established offices and development centers all over the globe including the United States and Canada, Europe, and Australia.
Infosys continued to grow through the early 2000s in both revenue and expansion. In 2000, the company hit $200 million in revenue and opened offices in France and Hong Kong. Within a decade, it hit $6 billion in revenue and opened offices and development centers in UAE, Argentina, Japan, Netherlands, Singapore, and Switzerland.
In 2017, Infosys announced that it would open four new technology centers in the United States. Indianapolis was chosen as one of these sites for its central location, proximity to clients, and access to educational institutions. State and city officials also provided Infosys $100 million worth of performance-based state incentives. The tax credits would be earned once the company fulfilled its promise of hiring 3,000 employees by the end of 2023.

became the home of Infosys’ new Technology and Innovation Hub in March 2018. The hub serves as an innovation lab, showcasing new prototypes in virtual, augmented, and robotic technologies, and as a space to foster co-creation, training, and collaboration among its employees.In November 2018, Infosys began construction of a new $245 million education center and residential facility on the site of the former Indianapolis International Airport terminal. By November 2019, Infosys had hired 500 of the 3,000 Indiana employees it promised to employ. The COVID-19 pandemic put a damper on the company’s plans to open the complex in fall 2020.
A new Cyber Defense Center, Infosys’ seventh, was opened in the Indianapolis Technology and Innovation Hub in March 2020. The centers are dedicated and organized to prevent, detect, assess, and respond to cybersecurity threats and breaches.
On July 28, 2020, Indiana University announced its partnership with Infosys to offer an online MBA and other graduate degrees. The company’s U.S.-based employees will have access to graduate and undergraduate degree programs locally, including the IU Kelley School of Business’s top-ranked online MBA, Kelley Direct Online. The agreement positions the Kelley School of Business to benefit from the pipeline of talent Infosys could provide to its online MBA and other programs.
