The Marion County Surveyor is an official required by the Indiana constitution. The position is elected by all voters in the county in presidential election years. The surveyor serves a four-year term and may be reelected to any number of terms.

The surveyor is responsible for surveying and keeping detailed records of all section corners in the county. The surveyor’s office maintains record books containing detailed depictions of all grants, tracts, and subdivisions within the county. In addition, the surveyor serves as the county’s supervising engineer, overseeing the construction and maintenance of roadways, bridges, and stormwater ditches and drains. The surveyor may appoint assistants to aid in the performance of the duties of the office.

The surveyor supplies plans, public domain locations, right-of-way, and other technical information on demand for anyone who has need of it, including individuals and developers.
