In 1997, Daniel E. Efroymson and his wife Lori provided a gift that was instrumental to the formation of Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF) and the partnership between the Indianapolis Foundation and the Hamilton County Community Foundation. The couple then established the Efroymson Family Fund as a donor-advised fund in 1998. At the time, the fund represented one of the first donor-advised funds that the CICF accepted, as well as the largest such fund in the nation.

The organization’s enduring mission is to continue the long and distinguished philanthropic legacy of the Efroymson Family in Indianapolis and across the United States. From 1919 to 1999 three generations of Efroymsons, gustave, robert, and Daniel Efroymson served on the board of directors of The Indianapolis Foundation.

Since 1999, the fund has provided financial support to a diverse range of organizations and causes in arts and culture, historic preservation, the environment, and helping those in need. Three board members, one consultant, and a staff of 47 employees work toward maintaining the organization’s mission.

The Efroymson Family Fund’s establishment and the creation of CICF were symbiotic, as CICF began in part to partner with it. The fund has been a major catalyst for the creation of new not-for-profits, buildings, and programs that have changed the landscape and greatly enhanced the vitality of Indianapolis.

In 2004, the Fund established the Efroymson Contemporary Arts Fellowship program to support the artistic development of emerging and established artists and to increase awareness of contemporary art in the Midwest. A total of 50 fellows have received $25,000 each for a total distribution of $1,000, 000. Since its inception, the Efroymson Family Fund has awarded more than 2,200 grants totaling nearly $120 million.
