NUVO was a free alternative weekly publication distributed widely throughout Indianapolis and the metro area. It ceased print publication in 2019 and became a monthly digital magazine. The first print issue of NUVO was published on March 25, 1990. Local owner and publisher Kevin McKinney along with a team of writers and photographers featured news stories, and music, food, theatre, and film reviews.

The publication was known for its “Best of Indy” awards list that covered a wide range of topics from the best meals under $5 to the best local bands. It remained a weekly alternative newsweekly in Indianapolis until November 2018, when it switched to a bi-weekly printing schedule. In March 2019, NUVO transitioned again, this time from a for-profit print newspaper, to an online-only nonprofit publication. Instead of traditional advertising, the financial model shifted entirely to a membership-supported system in which readers assisted in reporting and researching stories based on writers’ passions.

The digital-only publication temporarily ceased operations in May 2020. This decision was reversed after the publication received a deal on the internet hosting that allowed for the continuation of the digital format. The NUVO Cultural Foundation was established as a nonprofit community journalism project that is membership-driven. One-hundred percent of the membership fees are shared equally among the writers.
