16 Tech, a life sciences research community located on the near westside of Indianapolis, was first conceived following a 2002 study commissioned by the
to research the development of a life sciences hub in Indianapolis. The aim was to create an innovation hub with offices, retail, creative spaces, and apartments as well as green space and walking trails that would attract scientists, engineers, designers, and professionals. Nearly 20 years after the study, the 16 Tech Innovation District officially opened on August 4, 2020. The district is located on a 50-acre site in the Riverside neighborhood.Innovation Building 1, which opened the same day as the district, set the stage for this collaborative atmosphere. Its tenants included the Indiana Biosciences Research Institute,
, and the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership. The next building completed was the Innovation Hub, known as HqO to honor the Indianapolis Water Company that was previously located at the site. HqO provides access to workspaces, a maker space, and an artisan marketplace.
The 16 Tech Community Corporation is the nonprofit group behind developing the district. In addition to working on the innovation district, the nonprofit also launched the 16 Tech Community Investment Fund in 2019 to provide grants for projects focused on revitalizing the surrounding neighborhoods.
