(Nov 5, 1883-Sept. 4, 1971). Born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, Christian J. Emhardt and his family moved to Indianapolis when he was six months old. A Manual High School graduate, he received his law degree from the Indiana Law School and began an Indianapolis practice in 1906.

A longtime southside Democratic Party leader, Emhardt was Center Township justice of the peace from 1910 to 1914 and served on the Marion County Election Board. He served three terms on the City Council and, as president of that body, took over as interim mayor when Mayor Phillip L. Bayt resigned in 1951 to become a judge.

Emhardt was elected a judge of the Marion Superior Court in 1959, serving a four-year term. He also was director of the Emhardt Memorial Hospital on the city’s southside, which was founded by his brother, Dr. John Emhardt.
