The office of county recorder is required by the Indiana constitution. The recorder is elected by all voters in the county in even-numbered, non-presidential election years. The recorder serves a 4-year term and may be reelected, but no person may serve in the position for more than 8 years in a 12-year period.
The primary responsibility of the recorder’s office is preserving public documents. The office maintains records of property boundaries and property ownership, including deeds and liens. The office also maintains articles of incorporation, bankruptcy notices, records of discharges from the armed forces, and other records as needed or as specified by law. The recorder collects fees from individuals filing such documents and transmits those fees to the county treasurer.
