Anthem and WellPoint, Inc. established their respective philanthropies, Anthem Foundation and WellPoint Health Networks Foundation, in 2000. Four years later, Anthem, Inc. merged with WellPoint, Inc., and the foundations merged in 2006. Renamed Anthem Foundation in 2014, this change corresponds with the corporate level name change.

As the philanthropic arm of Anthem, Inc., the Anthem Foundation promotes the organization’s commitment to improving lives and communities. Through strategic partnerships and programs, the foundation addresses the social determinants that will help create a healthier generation of Americans.

The centerpiece of this mission is Anthem Foundation’s Healthy Generations Program. Established in 2000, this initiative uses innovative social mapping technology and analyzes public health data to provide a snapshot of the major health issues in each state. The foundation uses these tools to drill down to the zip code level and target initiatives that positively affect the conditions that matter most to the social determinants of health.

Healthy Generations’ focus areas in 2020 are Healthy Hearts, Cancer Prevention, Healthy Maternal Practices, Healthy Diabetes Prevention, Healthy Active Lifestyles, and Mental Health. Anthem Foundation partners and provides grants ($54 million worth in 2019) to thousands of local and national nonprofits that address these issues.

In addition to its Healthy Generations Program, Anthem Foundation supports disaster response and preparedness, social justice, and corporate volunteerism. Since 2015, the annual Anthem Volunteer Days has involved more than 8,000 Anthem associates engaged in over 25,000 community service hours for hundreds of different projects around the country.
