The Franklin Greenway Trail, also known as the Franklin Historic Trail, is a 3.4-mile paved system of pathways for non-motorized use. The trail connects walkers, hikers, and cyclists to three Franklin parks, a dog park, the cemetery, the city court, Needham Elementary School, numerous neighborhoods, Franklin College, and the Indiana Gymnastics Center. The paved shared-use path/trail design features two distinct types of trails, enabling the exploration of areas where motorized traffic is prohibited. Side paths run alongside Franklin city roads as extensions of the existing sidewalk system and river trails follow Franklin city waterways on land.

The Franklin Greenway Trail is part of a larger initiative to develop 165 miles of paved trails in Johnson County. In 2019 the Aspire Economic Development and Chamber Alliance proposed and passed their plan to create a multi-modal non-motorized transportation system. When completed, the trail will be composed of 67.7 miles of shared roadway open to both bicycles and motor vehicles, and 96.5 miles of shared-use trails for the strict use of pedestrians and cyclists.
