Founded in 2012, the Jubilate Choir is one of many choirs that make up the
(ICC). Conductor Lauren Southard designed the Jubilate program for the ICC, to fill a gap in performing arts opportunities for Indianapolis-area children with disabilities. The choir is for singers in grades 3–9, with participants bringing varying abilities to the group, ranging from a love of singing and public performance to nonverbal forms of communication. Children may participate in the Jubilate Choir when the approaches of the ICC’s other performing choirs do not adequately encompass their individual needs and abilities. The Jubilate curriculum presents musical concepts in creative and individualized ways meant to reach each ensemble member and has filled a gap in the performing arts for children with disabilities. The Jubilate Choir’s typical size ranges from eight to twenty singers, along with five to ten advanced mentors. Jubilate singers rehearse weekly at the Indianapolis Children’s Choir Performing Arts Center, working on performance repertoire and music theory concepts. Mentor singers from the ICC’s advanced ensembles serve as volunteers, models, and friends, helping participants to build social as well as musical skills. Unlike many programs for children with disabilities, Jubilate does not use peer-to-peer (or one-to-one “buddy”) approaches for instruction, but rather invites its singers with disabilities to participate as independently achieving peers within the full ensemble.
Jubilate singers perform at least twice per year during the ICC’s concert season schedule. The performances give participants the opportunity to sing on large stages throughout Central Indiana alongside hundreds of singers. Through the ICC’s training and support, the Jubilate Choir members gain confidence performing in front of large audiences.
